3 Quick Tips When Building A Website For Mobile Devices

1. It must be responsive

Website design is not a one and done process, the layout for each screen is uniquely crafted with the user experience in mind. I’ll use one of my clients as an example. The desktop and mobile site for Attorney Herb Rosen has noticeable arrangement modifications. Why? Because the purpose slightly changes between devices. A desktop has a lot of real estate for the viewer to consume, this is the area where companies can go further into detail about their product or service and not risk cluttering the site. Mobile sites highlight more of the key elements of the business with a click-to-call or click-to-email button at the top.

2. Understand the “Thumb Zone”

Do you remember the last time you were on a website and your thumb accidentally clicked on a button and sent you to another page? Were you a little frustrated? I would be too.

Content placement is critical for mobile. When designing for mobile, we use the “Thumb Zone” as a guide to ensure high usability. The “Thumb Zone” is the natural area a thumb will occupy on a mobile device. This can be hard to avoid, especially if you’re working with a template website, which is another reason we recommend working with a web designer.


3.  Avoid the immediate Pop-ups

Not only will this boost your bounce rate, but it will leave a lousy first impression to most new viewers. One of the things that people love about the internet, is that we have control to go at our own pace without feeling rushed. Pop-up ruins that atmosphere.

Google views intrusive pop-up ads as spammy, and ranks a website lower. There are ways to correctly place advertisements on a website without Google punishing your rankings.

Instead, find a new way to layout your featured items on your website. If you’re running a promotion,  try email newsletters, or placing a button at the top, or create a side banner.
